3rd Grade Friends is a power duo appropriately composed of third grade friends, Rob and Joe. Rob’s polyrhythmic drums sync perfectly with Joe’s hypnotic guitar work proving both are masters of their instruments. Their music is a juxtaposition of structured mathrock and chaotic punk, combined with long spacey throw back prog solos. And none of this will make sense, but when you see the chemistry of these old friends and combine it with the elementary school themed song names, you’ll laugh and cry as you remember recess with your old friends. Maybe you’ll call those old playground pals, meet up and discuss the old days, rekindling a friendship you both once forgot. And then you can look back and say “it was all thanks to 3rd Grade Friends!”

The Baltimore-based group 9 Mile Roots describes their music as “hard rock riffs, hip-hop flow, and thick syncopated horn lines.” This is all on display brilliantly in their upcoming album ReEvolve (releasing May 19). There is plenty of laid-back rock/reggae fusion that hearkens back to groups like 311 and Sublime, and that is the greatest strength of ReEvolve. You can tell that the band is there to have a great time and make catchy songs along the way. 9 Mile Roots play a tight sound, with every instrument never seeming out of place. Especially with Summer fast approaching, this may be a record you want in your collection. ~ DEREK KORTEPETER, for MIXOLYDIANBLOG
Album Notes
9 Mile Roots is a Suburban Roots Reggae band based out of the Baltimore / DC metro. Built behind a solid group of musicians pulling from diverse backgrounds, the music delivers creative tunes that have a strong reggae vibe with a bouncy hip-hop flow and a bit of a rock edge. Boasting a high energy sound and a dynamic stage show, 9 Mile Roots keeps the crowd on their toes with a commanding presence and booming melody hooks. Their full horn section compliments the typical rock band line-up; combining catchy melodies with strong riffs and a reggae-funk-overtone, consistently blending up well known aspects of the rock and reggae genres.
This is music for grownups—real songs for real people—lovingly crafted and put forth with a complete lack of pretense. Here are 11 tracks on which the voice of experience takes center stage with stories of loss and longing, of hope and redemption—all wrapped inside a tight and often lush musical arrangement.
Avid listeners are in for some delightful surprises, including the flare of Dixieland horns near the end of “Angels” and the inspired inclusion of the pedal steel guitar in “Holy Week.” Listen also for wry nods to artists like David Bowie, Neil Young and The Ramones. The musicianship on “One” is first rate, and every instrument has a reason for being just where it is on any given song. Big props for such a judicious mix, which keeps everything in perfect check on this record. Time and distance may keep you from seeing your friends as often as you like, but “One” is a reminder that genuine friendship—just like authentic music—is always worth the effort. by Grant Martin for Underground Wednesday
