Mike Heuer (pronounced “Hoyer”) keeps it tight on his self-titled EP, released in May 2013 by Burnside Records. You can envision couples getting down to the fun grooves that Heuer kicks out. The album is like a reggae-soul blast off of Rob Thomas & Santana’s “Smooth.” The rhythm acoustic guitar, percussion, and keyboard combo are in delicate balance, making the songs easy to vibe with and enjoy. The playing is easy, breezy, and sounds effortless, allowing your mind to wander and imagine chillin’ on the beach with friends and a beer.
All of the songs are skillfully composed; the lyrics are well thought-out and flow together excellently with the music. One particular favorite lyric of ours is from the opening track “Badfire,” in which he sings, “spreading love like peanut butter.” Another inspired Heuer jam, “Sittin’ in the Sun” includes, “Got a dollar that’s a lot to me / You’re the gardeners growin’ that dollar tree / Control your remote but you won’t control me.” The seductive sax chorus echoes Mike’s voice. In “Spirits,” the main chorus of “Living on hate and love” repeats over a smooth island melody.
The album also features solid contributions from longtime local musician Ryan Cullen (Greenbeets, Dirty City Band), who mixed the album and is mixing/mastering Mike's upcoming record - GoodFire. Mike Heuer is exactly what the Annapolis music scene needs: a laid back, committed funk-soul artist dedicated to making well-crafted songs that are fun but also thought provoking.
